Gum (Periodontal) Disease can be described in two main stages. The first, more common stage is gingivitis. Gingivitis occurs when the bacteria in our mouths begins to attack gum tissue resulting in red, swollen or puffy gums which may bleed upon brushing or flossing. As gingivitis can also be asymptomatic in its early stages, it is important to maintain a system of regular checks to avoid its escalation into periodontitis

As the bacteria delve deeper into the gum tissues and begins to attack the supporting ligaments and bone, gingivitis escalates into a more serious condition called periodontitis. Periodontitis can result in gum and bone recession and if left untreated, tooth loss. Although the effects of periodontitis are not reversible, they can be treated to stop progression.
